April 8th 2009

Three months after we reported to you on the 3 first events of our Winter Series 2008/09, we now come back to tell you about the last 2 Series and the sum up of the full 2008/09 Cascais Winter Series.

“14th HMKing Juan Carlos” (IDA Grade 2) and “16th Prince Henry the Navigator” Trophies

We had an average of 15 dragons sailing these last 2 series, with 17 entries, including 5 foreign Dragons, in the last event, the “King Juan Carlos Trophy” (March 12-15th), an IDA Grade 2 regatta, which, together with the “Prince Henry Trophy” (Feb 26th to March 1st), are the Portuguese part of the Iberian Championship, completed by the Mediterranean Cup and Princess Sofia in Palma.

Once more, sea, wind and temperature conditions (particularly the outstanding 24ºC sunny and 10-20 knots wind conditions for the King J.Carlos Trophy!) allowed for most of the planned programs for those 2 events to be completed (2 races missed, of which 1 canceled after the start, due to dying wind, out of a total of 14 scheduled).

Again, winds ranged from light to medium (never exceeding 20 knots), mostly north/westerlies with some east/southerlies, often shifty and mostly with both sides of the course paying. This led to very tactical and competitive Dragon racing, with 5 different helmsmen occupying the 6 podium positions for the 2 series!

The competing 14 portuguese Dragons had the pleasure of the company of 5 foreign Dragon crews: Quentin Strauss and Ivan Bradbury with Martin Payne from the UK, Cameron Good from Ireland, Stefan Winberg from Sweden and Vincent Hoesch with Michael Lipp from Germany.

We also had the great support from Ulli Libor from Germany that “volunteered” to be the tactitian for José Matoso in those series and ended up working out his muscles pumping the spinnaker down the Cascais swell with 20 knots in a couple of races!

Sum Up of the 2008/09 Cascais Dragon Winter Series

Summing up the full 2008/09 Cascais Winter Series, a total of 32 races were held out of 38 scheduled (84% success race completion) in the 6 series and 20 days of racing, with the presence of 22 different Dragons of which 6 foreign crews.

Overall, the weather and, particularly, the racing conditions were very good, with different ranges of winds from light to low twenties knots and from different quarters; less than half an hour is needed to reach any of the 3 usual racing areas offering different sailing with flatter water and shiftier winds closer inshore and the larger ocean swell further out west with stronger and more predictable wind pattern.

The great support of the Estoril/Cascais Tourism Board for the Cascais Winter Series allowed for some incentives for the foreign crews, a convivial after race free happy hour, a free seated dinner in he Club for the King Juan Carlos Trophy and fine porcelain and silver prizes for the individual series podium positions and for the final ranking of the Winter Series.

With the continued support of the Tourism Board and the success we consider attained to date, we are finalizing plans for a similar and improved edition of the 2009/10 Cascais Dragon Winter Series.

The dates of 23rd-25th October (2 weeks after the Europeans in St. Tropez), 27th-29th November and 4th-6th December 2009 have already been set and published in the IDA Dragon Regatta Schedule for the first 3 Series.

Very soon we will be writing to you to indicate the remaining 2010 dates as well as the other conditions and incentives we are planning for the next Winter Series with an emphasis on offering Good Dragon Racing and Service to the Owners/Crew.

We take this opportunity to thank the presence and support of all the foreign Dragon sailors that attended this past Cascais Winter Series and invite them to return to Cascais for the next ones, as well as extending that invitation and our most warm welcome to all of the other Dragon sailors.

January 1st 2009

Three months have passed since we, from the Clube Naval de Cascais and the Portuguese Dragon Fleet, had the great pleasure of sailing with many of you in the Gold Cup.

In the meantime, and as promised, we kept a busy training schedule, successfully holding the 3 first events of our Winter Series 2008/09.

We had an average of 12 dragons sailing in the 3 series, all with 3 days of racing.

Sea, wind and temperature (and Sun!) conditions were good to excellent throughout, allowing for the planned programs to be completed, with 5 races held in the first two series (24-26th Oct and 21-23rd Nov), culminating with 8 races in the last series (Xmas Trophy 6-8th Dec).

Winds ranged from light to medium (never exceeding 20knots), mainly from north/westerly and some southerlies, some times shifty and mostly with both sides of the course paying.

This led to very competitive dragon racing with the 3 top places in the 3 regattas being completely different each time.

We had the pleasure of the company of four foreign crews: Quentin Strauss (GBR723), Cameron Good (IRL194), Julian Sowry (GBR on a portuguese dragon) and Stefan Winberg (SWE338) who won the December series. All these dragon sailors are keeping their dragons in the Clube Naval de Cascais and will be sailing the following three series between January and March 2009.

We also had the visit of the Russian dragon sailors Olga and Misha Mouratov that trained, for a very intensive full week and with excellent sailing conditons, with Vincent Hoesch in mid November; they left their 2 “Murka”dragons in our club and promissed to come down for the next Winter Series.

These will be held in January 16-18th 2009, February 26th to March 1st – “16th Prince Henry, the Navigator Trophy” and in March 12-15th “9th King Juan Carlos I Trophy”(Grade2 Event). These last two of these series are the Portuguese part of the Iberian Dragon Championship, completed by the Mediterranean Cup and Princess Sofia races in Palma.

We have been able to secure the support of the Estoril/Cascais Tourism Board for the 2009 Winter Series program (upcoming 3 series but also next Fall) and we will thus further improve not only the racing organization of those events but also their social program and prizes.

We will continue to keep you posted and look very much forward to welcome many more foreign dragon sailors to participate in the upcoming 2009 Cascais Winter Series.

For any questions you may have or issues you may need assistance (boat parking or delivery, hotel or travel arrangements, airport pick up, crews, ets…) do not hesitate to contact any of us  (jose.smmatoso@gmail.com; mario.quina@gmail.com or PRAndrade@quantumsails.com).
